Matheson Unveils OTTO: A Symbol of Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace

Matheson has proudly revealed OTTO, their newly designed Elephant In The Room, created as part of the Elephant In The Room Movement to raise awareness about mental health in the workplace. This initiative stems from an internal competition where Matheson employees were encouraged to submit name suggestions along with meaningful explanations behind their ideas. The winning name, OTTO—which stands for Openly Talking Together Often—was submitted by Josie McManus from Practice Area Marketing.

The design, which reflects the complexity and busyness of our minds, was the brainchild of Laura Donohoe from Finance. Painted by Susie Kelly; her artwork also incorporates Matheson’s five key values: Partnership, Respect, Innovation, Diversity, and Entrepreneurship.

During a special unveiling event at Matheson’s Dublin offices, Managing Partner Michael Jackson welcomed Brent Pope, who shared his deeply personal mental health journey in a fireside chat with Mark O'Sullivan, Tax Partner. Brent spoke about the importance of breaking down barriers and creating spaces where open conversations about mental health can thrive.

Lorraine Roche, Director of HR, wrapped up the event by announcing the winning name and design. Now proudly displayed in Matheson’s office, OTTO serves as a daily reminder of the invisible challenges that individuals may face and the significance of open, impactful conversations around mental well-being.

Through initiatives like this, Matheson continues to show its dedication to promoting mental health awareness and fostering a supportive workplace environment.

Let’s all take inspiration from OTTO—openly talk, share, and support one another in the journey to mental health and well-being.
